It may be the class system. World of Warcraft: Forever represents an unusually difficult exercise in MMORPG design because Blizzard is attempting to preserve the character of Vanilla while correcting weaknesses that only became fully visible after more than two decades of player experimentation. The nine original classes are not simply being given larger damage numbers or a handful of recognizable spells from later expansions. Instead, the emerging design suggests that Blizzard is rebuilding the relationships among resources, abilities, talents, defensive mechanics, specialization identities, mobility, utility, and group roles while deliberately keeping those changes inside a level-60 environment that still values travel, preparation, positioning, threat, crowd control, resource management, communication, professions, and social organization. The result is potentially more consequential than a normal content update because the class system is the interface through which players experience almost every part of Azeroth. Blizzard has explicitly framed Forever around four central principles: approachable and familiar, the world as the main character, the journey before the destination, and the social experience. Those principles provide a useful lens for understanding why the class changes matter. Forever is not adding modern combat systems to a game that has already adopted the conveniences and compression of Retail; there is no level scaling, no flying-centric world structure, and no assumption that the player should be rushed immediately toward endgame. Blizzard instead appears to be trying to preserve the friction that made Classic meaningful while removing some of the friction that made particular specializations incomplete, cumbersome, or irrelevant. In that sense, the class redesign is not separate from the rest of Forever’s philosophy. It is one of the primary ways Blizzard is attempting to make the original game feel more complete without making it feel fundamentally different. That distinction changes how the new abilities should be evaluated. A talent that adds five percent damage is easy to understand, but a talent that changes Rage generation, creates a new state for a future attack, changes the frequency of a defensive cooldown, or turns a formerly passive effect into an active decision can alter the entire way a class is played. An ability that appears mediocre in a stationary raid encounter may become enormously valuable in a dungeon, in open-world PvP, in a battleground objective fight, or in Hardcore where survival has a completely different economic value. Forever therefore needs to be evaluated as a collection of interconnected systems rather than as a collection of isolated tooltips. The central question is not simply whether Blizzard has made the classes stronger. It is whether Blizzard has made them more complete without making them less recognizable. New evidence from the September 2026 playable demonstration strengthens that conclusion. Solheim Gaming’s September 13 walkthrough of the visible talent trees across all nine classes exposes a much larger number of interactions than the initial Blizzard presentations alone make obvious. The walkthrough points toward deeper resource relationships, more deliberate specialization identities, more cross-tree incentives, stronger defensive systems, new hybrid interactions, and a much more active role for abilities that historically existed only on the margins of Classic gameplay. At the same time, this material must be treated with discipline. Solheim’s video is a community examination of a pre-beta demonstration rather than a final Blizzard design document, and the video itself repeatedly acknowledges uncertainty. Some values remain incomplete, some tooltips are difficult to read, some spell acquisition details are not fully established, and the community is already debating interactions that cannot yet be proven from the available footage. This article therefore separates what the available evidence demonstrates from what the evidence strongly suggests and from what RUIN should test during beta before making a definitive claim. This is not a launch tier list. It is a systems analysis of the class architecture Blizzard is currently building and a framework for understanding how the Forever META may develop once real players begin testing it. The Most Important New Finding: The Talent Trees Are Not the Whole Story
One of the most important observations emerging from the current class discussion is that the visible talent trees may not represent the entire class redesign. Community analysis surrounding the demonstration has pointed toward additional baseline abilities appearing outside the talent trees, with earlier access to familiar abilities such as Crusader Strike being cited as one example. The exact implementation must be confirmed in the beta client, but the broader point is significant regardless of the final details because it means players should not assume that the talent tree alone determines how a class will function. The distinction between a talent and a baseline ability is particularly important in a level-1-to-60 game. A level-60 capstone may define a specialization at endgame, but a baseline ability acquired early can influence dozens of hours of leveling, questing, dungeon play and world PvP before the player ever reaches the final talent structure. If Blizzard is changing baseline spell acquisition alongside the trees, then Forever is changing not merely the theorycrafting layer but the actual moment-to-moment experience of playing the class.
This creates an important methodological requirement for RUIN. A serious Forever class database cannot simply record talents; it needs a complete level-by-level spellbook and ability audit that documents what each class can actually do, when those tools appear, how they affect leveling, and which new interactions become available as the character progresses. The spellbook should be treated as the foundation, while the talent tree becomes the specialization layer built on top of it. That approach is particularly important because the community is already finding evidence that Blizzard may be addressing one of Vanilla’s most persistent weaknesses: long stretches of combat in which some classes rely heavily on one or two primary actions. A successful redesign does not necessarily require modern-Retail complexity. It can instead give the player more meaningful reasons to choose between the tools they already possess. What Has Changed About the Original Classic Formula?Solheim’s walkthrough reveals a remarkably consistent pattern across the nine classes. Blizzard is frequently taking an existing Vanilla resource or mechanic and attaching another decision to it. Rage becomes more than a bar that fills and empties. Mana becomes something that can be manipulated as part of offensive or defensive planning. Combo Points can influence cooldown availability. Seals can become combat states. DoTs can interact with channels. Melee attacks can generate spellcasting opportunities. Forms can alter mobility and resource flow. Pets can become part of the player’s active rotation rather than simply a passive source of additional damage. Four broad design patterns appear repeatedly throughout the captured trees: resource relationships, temporary combat states, cross-tree incentives, and situational role expansion. These patterns matter because they indicate that Blizzard is not simply attempting to raise the numerical floor of weak classes. It is attempting to give their existing mechanics more internal logic, so that abilities interact with one another instead of functioning as isolated pieces of a talent tree. This creates a crucial distinction between Vanilla+ numbers and Vanilla+ systems. Adding five percent damage changes how powerful an ability is. Giving that ability a relationship with a proc, another resource, a defensive state, or a future attack changes how the entire class is played. Forever increasingly appears to be pursuing the second kind of change. The beta will therefore need to answer a much harder question than “Which class got buffed the most?” It needs to establish which classes received the best feedback loops—the mechanics in which one successful action creates an opportunity for another action, which creates another resource state, which creates another meaningful choice. The classes with the best feedback loops may ultimately outperform classes that simply received the largest numerical increases. Warrior – A Deeper Rage, Weapon and Tanking RedesignRoles: Tank and Melee DPS. Warrior remains the purest expression of Classic’s physical combat philosophy, but the talent evidence indicates that Blizzard is making the class considerably more interactive without stripping away the weapon-and-Rage identity that defines it. Arms receives Spearing Strike, a Rage-cost attack with additional effectiveness against Giants, Dragonkin and mounted targets that can dismount a mounted enemy. That looks situational at first glance, but it represents a larger design philosophy in which a DPS specialization receives contextual utility instead of being measured exclusively by sustained boss damage. Bloodthrill creates another meaningful Arms interaction by allowing attacks against targets affected by Rend to generate additional Overpower opportunities. Rend therefore becomes part of a larger combat loop rather than simply another debuff to maintain. Improved Slam is equally important because reducing its cast time and global-cooldown burden while preserving the Warrior’s melee swing timing addresses one of the longstanding practical problems associated with using Slam effectively. Weapon Mastery may prove to be one of the most interesting pieces of the redesign because the captured structure suggests that different weapon types can carry different advantages. Critical-strike and armor-related interactions mean that the weapon can once again become a meaningful component of the build instead of simply the item with the largest damage range. If those systems survive beta tuning, Warrior theorycrafting may need to evaluate weapon family and talent architecture together rather than treating weapon choice as a separate equipment question. Fury receives a more aggressive Rage economy. Raging Blows improves Whirlwind’s off-hand interaction and reduces the Rage burden associated with Cleave. Dual Wield Specialization contributes to off-hand effectiveness, Rage generation and hit chance, while additional talents increase Rage availability and generation. The overall effect is not simply “more damage.” It is an attempt to increase the number of meaningful decisions a Fury Warrior can make with the resource that defines the class. Protection may receive the most important functional improvements. Vanguard allows Charge while in Defensive Stance, reducing one of the old stance-management restrictions. Last Stand provides a substantial emergency survival tool. Master of Defense connects defensive events more directly to Rage generation, while Bastion gives the shield an additional offensive purpose. Shield Slam also appears to gain utility through the ability to remove a magical effect from the target, potentially giving Protection greater relevance in encounters where dispel-like utility matters. The combined picture is more compelling than any single talent. Warrior is not being turned into another modern tank; it is being given additional reasons to use its existing resource system intelligently. Warrior PvE AssessmentArms could become one of the strongest leveling and dungeon configurations because its toolkit now contains more ways to convert sustained combat into resource-driven decisions. Rend creates Overpower opportunities, Slam becomes easier to integrate, weapon specialization may matter more, and Sweeping Strikes and other tools provide stronger value against groups. The critical endgame question will be whether Arms can remain competitive enough against Fury to justify the specialization beyond leveling and PvP. Fury remains the obvious sustained-damage candidate, but its expanded Rage economy could create an interesting balance problem. If the resource system provides too much freedom, Fury may converge on an overwhelmingly efficient priority sequence; if Blizzard constrains it too aggressively, the new talents may feel cosmetic rather than transformative. The beta needs to establish whether the additional Rage actually creates decision-making or simply increases the number of attacks that fit inside the same rotation. Protection deserves considerably more attention than traditional Vanilla tier lists would suggest. Greater movement freedom, stronger defensive cycling, improved Rage feedback and additional utility could make the specialization exceptionally strong in five-player content even if Fury remains the benchmark for raid DPS. Warrior PvP AssessmentWarrior’s PvP value may rise through utility rather than simply damage. Spearing Strike has obvious implications for mounted players in the open world, Bloodthrill creates additional Overpower opportunities, improved Hamstring can provide stronger control, and improved Slam may make burst sequencing more reliable. Protection’s additional mobility and defensive options could also make it more credible in objective-based PvP than the historical perception of Protection as a purely PvE specialization would suggest. The underlying Warrior PvP question is therefore less “How much damage does it do?” and more “How effectively can it control the distance and tempo of an engagement?” That is a much more interesting problem for a class built around Rage, movement and weapon pressure. Paladin – A Potentially Complete Rebuild of the Class LoopRoles: Tank, Healer and Melee DPS. Paladin may be the most consequential class redesign in Forever because Blizzard appears to be addressing the underlying structure of all three specializations rather than simply strengthening a weak tree. The Holy tree contains more active relationships among Holy Strike, Holy Shock, healing criticals, Mana regeneration and anti-interrupt mechanics, suggesting that Holy is being moved toward a more responsive combat model in which offensive and defensive actions influence one another. Improved Holy Strike reduces the ability’s cooldown, while Voice of Truth provides a temporary immunity to Silence and interrupt effects. Reverence allows Mana regeneration to continue while casting, and Infusion of Light links Holy Shock and critical healing to subsequent Holy Light casts. Light Vigil appears to go even further by allowing Holy Shock to interact differently with friendly and hostile targets. That is a fundamental philosophical shift. Vanilla Holy Paladin was often understood primarily as a highly efficient healer with a limited offensive role. Forever appears to be testing whether a Paladin can instead operate as a true battlefield hybrid whose Holy abilities have multiple applications depending on the state of the encounter. Protection is even more dramatic. Shield Specialization appears to create Mana recovery through blocking. Improved Righteous Fury adds damage reduction while the defensive aura is active. Seal of Fury interacts with defensive and resource mechanics. Templar’s Bulwark provides a substantial absorb effect, while Iron Creed connects Holy Strike to threat generation and mitigation. The importance of this system is practical rather than theoretical. A tank can already survive without infinite resources. The real issue in long Classic encounters is whether the tank can continue performing its role efficiently without excessive downtime. If Forever’s Protection Paladin can turn blocking and Holy abilities into a sustained Mana-and-threat loop, Blizzard may have solved one of the most important usability problems associated with Vanilla Paladin tanking. Retribution contains an equally important innovation. Sanctify increases the importance of Judgment and Mana, Champion of the Light appears to create an Intellect scaling relationship, and Sacred Arbiter further strengthens Holy Strike and Judgment interaction. Then there is Twist of Light. The captured tooltip appears to formalize the basic idea behind Seal Twisting: changing from one relevant Seal to another generates an Echo, allowing the next melee attack to reproduce the replaced Seal’s effect. That is significant because it represents the kind of mechanic that experienced players might discover independently even if the game never explicitly supported it.
Paladin PvE AssessmentProtection could become one of the defining dungeon tanks of early Forever if the captured Mana systems survive beta. Retribution could become a legitimate sustained melee specialization rather than an occasional support option, while Holy could gain a much richer relationship between healing, offense and resource management. The most serious balance concern may actually be the opposite of Vanilla’s historical problem. Blizzard has spent years being criticized for weak Paladin specialization identity; Forever could potentially solve that problem so thoroughly that Paladin becomes useful in almost every situation. A healthy version of the class should offer compelling reasons to bring a Paladin without making the class mathematically compulsory. Paladin PvP AssessmentHoly Paladin could become one of the strongest organized support configurations because healing, defensive mitigation, offensive Holy damage and anti-control tools now overlap. Retribution may gain more sophisticated burst through Seal manipulation, while Protection could have unusual value in objective-focused environments where refusing to die is strategically more important than maximizing personal damage. The question has therefore changed. The issue is no longer whether Paladin can be viable. The issue is whether Blizzard can give Paladin substantial agency and utility while maintaining meaningful counterplay. Hunter – The Three-Way Experiment, and the First Real Tanking QuestionRoles: Ranged DPS and Melee DPS; expanded tanking remains unconfirmed. Hunter may be the strongest example of Blizzard deliberately creating multiple interpretations of a familiar class. Beast Mastery receives Summon Hawk, making the pet system more active and giving the Hunter another persistent source of battlefield pressure. The broader talent structure also appears to create more interaction between aspects, personal damage and pet behavior, reinforcing the concept of the Hunter as an active commander rather than a character whose pet simply supplies extra damage. Marksmanship receives Lone Wolf, formalizing the petless Hunter as a deliberate specialization identity. This is more consequential than it first appears because it turns a long-standing player preference into an intended branch of the class rather than leaving it as an unofficial choice made by players who simply decline to use their pet. Survival is where the redesign becomes genuinely disruptive to historical expectations. The captured tree contains parry, increased health, defensive mechanics, melee critical bonuses, trap improvements, Mongoose Bite interactions, Strider Kick and Lacerating Strikes. This is not merely a Hunter who can occasionally attack in melee; it is evidence of a specialization being constructed around sustained close-range combat. Melee Hunter should therefore be treated as an intended Survival archetype rather than a novelty. The tanking question is more difficult. Solheim’s examination notices enough defensive infrastructure to make the hypothesis reasonable, including parry, health, Deterrence-related mechanics and other survivability tools. But that is still not proof of a fourth Hunter role, and a professional analysis should not turn the existence of defensive talents into a declaration that Hunter tanks are confirmed.
Hunter PvE AssessmentBeast Mastery remains the safest expectation for leveling and solo play because the pet provides independent damage, threat separation and a meaningful buffer against mistakes. Marksmanship could become the strongest specialized ranged option if Lone Wolf and Sniper Shot scale properly with final itemization. Survival may be one of the largest beneficiaries of Forever’s redesign if Blizzard provides enough itemization and encounter support to make melee Hunter performance competitive outside niche situations. Gear is the critical variable. A melee specialization cannot be sustained by abilities alone; it needs an equipment ecosystem that provides the correct statistics, weapons and progression path. The beta should therefore test Survival not merely with its intended talents but with realistic leveling and endgame equipment. Hunter PvP AssessmentSurvival could become unusually dangerous in PvP because traps, melee pressure, ranged utility and mobility can interact without forcing the player into an exclusively ranged identity. Summon Hawk deserves particular testing against casters, although any specific claim about spell pushback or interruption effects should remain provisional until directly verified. Marksmanship, meanwhile, could become an exceptionally potent ranged pressure build if Sniper Shot and Lone Wolf reward precise positioning without becoming a single-button burst gimmick. Rogue – Combo Points Become a Combat EngineRole: Melee DPS. Rogue’s redesign may be one of the cleanest demonstrations of how Forever is trying to make a Classic resource system more expressive. Assassination receives Mutilate, stronger poison relationships, additional Combo Point generation and Venom, turning what was historically a fairly linear poison strategy into a more deliberate sequence of states and finishers. Venom is especially important because its design appears to make poison maintenance an active choice. The exact optimum cannot yet be determined from the current evidence because duration, resource cost and final tuning all matter, but the underlying concept is clear: the Rogue now has to decide when maintaining a poison-enhancement state is more valuable than immediately spending Combo Points on a conventional finisher. Combat’s Restless Blades may be even more consequential. Every damaging finisher can reduce the remaining cooldown of Adrenaline Rush, Blade Flurry, Evasion, Sprint and Vanish. That changes Combo Points from a simple offensive resource into a mechanism for controlling the availability of the entire combat toolkit.
Subtlety receives its own deeper interactions. Directed Deeds alters the Energy and positional requirements around important control abilities. Serrated Blades provides additional armor interaction and increases Rupture damage. Thousand Cuts links periodic Rupture damage to the Energy cost of subsequent attacks. The result may be a Subtlety Rogue that remains dangerous after the opening sequence instead of relying almost entirely on the initial stealth engagement. That would substantially increase the specialization’s sustained PvP threat while preserving the characteristics that make the Rogue recognizable. Rogue PvE AssessmentCombat may become exceptionally strong in long encounters because successful offensive play actively reduces the downtime between major cooldowns. Assassination should become the natural poison-focused specialization, while Subtlety may gain value in encounters where control, target switching and burst windows are more important than sustained static damage. The beta should specifically test whether Restless Blades creates strategic choice or merely produces an obvious priority system. A mechanic can look highly interactive on paper while becoming completely deterministic once players understand the optimal sequence. Rogue PvP AssessmentRogue retains everything that made it powerful in Classic: stealth, mobility, control, target selection and burst. Forever’s potentially larger contribution is sustained pressure after the opener, which could make high-skill Rogue play significantly more difficult to read and counter. Priest – Prevention, Holy Damage and Resource ManagementRoles: Healer and Ranged DPS. Priest may contain one of the deepest redesigns hidden beneath a relatively familiar talent structure. Discipline receives clearer interaction among Holy Fire, Smite and Penance, indicating that Holy damage is becoming more intentionally integrated into the specialization rather than serving primarily as occasional utility. Power Word: Shield, Soul Warding, Renewed Hope and Divine Aegis similarly push the healer toward prevention instead of purely reactive restoration. The significance of Divine Aegis is not simply that it adds an absorb. It changes the meaning of a critical heal by allowing the benefit to persist as future protection. That creates a different form of healer skill expression: the Priest is not only restoring health but shaping the amount of future damage that the group can safely absorb. Holy becomes even more interesting. The captured tree contains Holy Nova, Searing Light, Litany of Light and Prayer of Mending. Litany of Light appears to reward changing healing spells by returning Mana, encouraging deliberate spell diversity instead of simply repeating one theoretically efficient heal.
Shadow also receives meaningful changes. Devouring Contagion can spread Devouring Plague under specific circumstances, Early Demise improves Shadow Word: Death against weakened targets, and the captured Shadow Form structure appears to offer a major efficiency benefit for Shadow spells. Those changes could matter as much for Shadow’s viability as any direct damage increase because sustained Mana economy has historically constrained the specialization. Priest PvE AssessmentDiscipline could become one of Forever’s defining prevention-based healers because its value comes from reducing future damage rather than simply repairing health bars. Holy may become exceptionally efficient if Litany of Light genuinely rewards thoughtful spell variation without forcing players into a rigid sequence. Shadow could gain a much stronger leveling and sustained-combat identity if its revised resource efficiency survives final tuning. Priest PvP AssessmentDiscipline has an unusually broad toolkit because it can pressure, heal, shield and manipulate weakened targets within the same encounter. Shadow adds stronger execution and sustained-pressure tools, while Holy’s improved healing economy could make it difficult to exhaust. The primary balance concern is self-sufficiency. A Priest that can simultaneously prevent damage, heal efficiently and maintain meaningful offensive pressure may become extremely powerful unless the individual systems contain sufficiently clear trade-offs. Shaman – Forever’s Most Complete Hybrid ExperimentRoles: Healer, Melee DPS and Ranged DPS. Shaman may be the most direct evidence that Forever learned from Season of Discovery without simply reproducing it. Elemental receives Lava Burst and stronger Flame Shock interaction, while Elemental Alacrity improves the casting profile of Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning and Lava Burst. These changes create a more recognizable ranged combat loop than original Vanilla Elemental possessed. Enhancement is even more transformative. Mental Dexterity creates an explicit relationship between Intellect and Attack Power. Stormstrike appears much earlier in the talent structure than players may expect, while related talents connect offensive availability to Mana regeneration and defensive events. Maelstrom Weapon then creates the defining relationship between melee attacks and spellcasting. This is the crucial difference:
Rage of the Farseer adds another layer of burst potential by combining increased melee and spellcasting speed in a temporary window. The exact values require beta validation, but the architecture suggests a class designed around momentum: attack, generate an opportunity, convert that opportunity into a spell, then return to melee combat. Restoration receives Water Shield, Mana Tide Totem and Riptide, reinforcing resource management and reactive healing. The tree is less visually radical than Enhancement, but the impact on real group play could be substantial because Mana efficiency frequently determines how long a healer can remain effective. Shaman PvE AssessmentEnhancement could become one of the strongest and most enjoyable leveling specializations because it has a coherent reason to remain engaged with the target rather than waiting for a perfect spellcasting opportunity. Elemental may experience one of the largest improvements among ranged specializations. Restoration may become less about raw novelty and more about reliability through improved resource control. Shaman PvP AssessmentShaman could become one of the defining hybrid PvP classes because it can move between physical pressure, magical pressure and healing. Enhancement has the potential to create unpredictable burst by converting melee uptime into spellcasting. Elemental gains a more deliberate ranged sequence, while Restoration becomes harder to exhaust through improved Mana and reactive healing tools. Mage – Arcane Becomes a Mana StrategyRole: Ranged DPS. Mage illustrates how Forever can borrow familiar later-era concepts without importing the later game’s entire combat philosophy. Arcane receives Arcane Blast, which increases the effectiveness of other spells while making subsequent Arcane Blasts substantially more expensive. The captured mechanic can stack, creating an explicit tension between building additional power and preserving the Mana required to exploit it. Missile Barrage provides a proc-based payoff, while Arcane Power creates a major burst window at another Mana cost. Taken together, these mechanics create a genuine resource-management system in which the player is constantly evaluating how much additional power can be purchased before the resource becomes too expensive.
Fire receives a reworked Hot Streak in which critical strikes build toward progressively shorter Pyroblast casts. The captured implementation appears to differ from later instant-Pyroblast behavior, which is significant because it suggests Blizzard is adopting the underlying proc concept without abandoning the slower rhythm of Classic combat. Frost receives Ice Lance and Fingers of Frost, creating stronger interaction between control and burst. Community examination has also raised the possibility that changes to Improved Blizzard and Permafrost could reduce the effectiveness of some of the most famous Classic AOE-farming techniques. That observation is worth testing, but it should remain explicitly provisional until the beta establishes the final values. Mage PvE AssessmentArcane may become the most interesting Mage specialization for theorycrafting because Mana changes from a passive limitation into an active offensive resource. Fire gains a stronger proc-driven identity without necessarily becoming identical to later expansion gameplay. Frost remains the safest expectation for control and leveling, but its final AOE efficiency needs to be measured rather than assumed. Mage PvP AssessmentFrost retains enormous potential because Ice Lance, Fingers of Frost, Ice Barrier and Counterspell create a strong combination of control and burst. Arcane could also become more dangerous than expected if skilled players can construct large Arcane Blast stacks before forcing a decisive burst sequence. Warlock – Affliction Becomes a System and Tanking Becomes a Serious Research QuestionRole: Ranged DPS; potential expanded defensive/tank identity remains unconfirmed. Warlock may ultimately provide the most interesting example of Blizzard using later player expectations to reshape a Classic class without simply converting it into a modern expansion specialization. Affliction receives deeper interaction among its damage-over-time effects and drain abilities. Improved Drains increases the effectiveness of Drain Life and Drain Soul according to the number of other Affliction effects active on the target, while Pandemic improves the critical-damage potential of the broader DoT and channel package. Then comes Drain Hope, which appears to create exactly the kind of interaction many Affliction players have wanted: establish a series of DoTs, then use a channel that is itself strengthened by the DoT state already created.
Demonology is similarly interesting. Demonic Pact appears to allow a Demonic Sacrifice effect to remain active while another Demon is summoned, provided the originally sacrificed Demon is not brought back. This creates a much more interesting relationship between passive pet benefits and active pet utility. Destruction receives Incinerate, stronger Immolate interaction, Shadow and Flame, and Bane of Havoc. The tanking question remains unresolved, but the evidence is now substantial enough to justify a formal research program. Warlock PvE AssessmentAffliction could become one of the strongest sustained-pressure specializations because the class now has more reasons to build and maintain a complete DoT state. Demonology may become the most customizable Warlock tree because the choice of Demon can influence both offensive and defensive behavior. If tanking is eventually confirmed, Warlock could become one of the most radically transformed classes in Forever because its traditional pet-and-DoT identity would support a much wider spectrum of roles. Druid – The Four-Role ProblemRoles: Tank, Healer, Melee DPS and Ranged DPS. Druid’s redesign is more subtle because the class was already the most flexible hybrid in Vanilla. Blizzard therefore has a difficult problem: strengthening weak forms and specializations without allowing Druid to become the automatic answer to every group problem. This is potentially one of the most important areas for beta theorycrafting because a build that looks unconventional on paper may ultimately produce the most coherent resource loop. RUIN should therefore treat hybrid talent configurations as first-class research subjects instead of treating them as fringe experiments. Race + Class + Specialization + Gear + Profession + EnvironmentForever’s new race/class combinations increase that complexity even further. More abilities do not automatically create meaningful decisions. More procs can simply create more things to track. The success of Forever’s redesign should therefore be judged by the number and quality of meaningful decisions per combat encounter, not the number of abilities shown in the talent calculator.
The Other Critical Test: Has Blizzard Preserved Skill Expression?There is an equally important danger on the opposite side. Some of Classic’s most memorable gameplay emerged because players discovered techniques that the UI did not explicitly teach them. If Blizzard removes every awkward interaction, every timing challenge and every edge case that created room for mastery, Forever could become cleaner while becoming less interesting. The strongest approach is to preserve the strategic idea while improving the accessibility of the execution. Seal Twisting is a useful example of that philosophy. If Blizzard can preserve the decision-making that expert players discovered while removing an unintuitive execution burden, it may increase accessibility without reducing depth.
The Hardcore Test Changes the Entire Meaning of PowerHardcore fundamentally changes how class strength should be measured. Blizzard has already identified Hardcore as part of the broader Forever roadmap, and the same class can have radically different value in a no-death environment than it does in a raid progression environment. The RUIN WoW Forever META Lab should begin with a complete spellbook and talent archive, then connect that documentation to controlled gameplay testing. Each class should have players responsible for maintaining a living record of abilities, builds, gear requirements, professions, dungeon performance, raid performance, PvP results and unusual interactions. Every test should capture the context necessary to reproduce the result. That means recording the race, class, specialization, talent distribution, gear stage, profession, consumables, encounter, group composition, player experience level, objective and observed result. The system should then distinguish between theoretical performance, observed performance and anecdotal performance instead of collapsing all three into one ranking. The most useful output will not simply be “Build X is best.” It will be “Build X performs best under these conditions, while Build Y performs better under these others.” That is far more useful to players and far more defensible as editorial analysis. RUIN’s Beta Research ProtocolPhase One – Complete Spellbook Audit. Record every baseline ability from level 1 through 60, including acquisition level, resource cost, cooldown, role, interaction and any apparent changes from the original Classic implementation. The goal is to test competing hypotheses rather than begin with one assumed answer. Phase Four – Leveling Trials. Use standardized routes and record time-to-level, downtime, deaths, travel, gold generation, consumables, gear dependence and dungeon participation. Where possible, multiple players should repeat the same route so RUIN can distinguish player-specific performance from build-specific performance. Phase Five – Dungeon Trials. Measure clear time, pull size, threat, healing efficiency, interrupts, crowd control, recovery, deaths and group composition. Dungeon performance should remain a separate category from raid performance. Phase Six – Raid Trials. Test single-target, multi-target, movement-heavy, utility-heavy and target-switch encounters. Damage should never be the only recorded metric; utility, survivability, mechanics handling and contribution to group efficiency should be documented alongside throughput. Phase Seven – PvP Trials. Separate open-world combat from battleground performance and eventually from organized competitive formats. Record not only kills and deaths but objective contribution, crowd control, defensive cooldown usage, target selection, mobility and utility. Phase Eight – Economy Trials. Measure the cost of maintaining each build, including weapons, armor, professions, crafted equipment, consumables and gold dependence. Hardcore should have its own ranking structure rather than being treated as ordinary leveling. Phase Ten – META Review. Every major research conclusion should point back to the conditions under which it was established. What RUIN Should Not DoRUIN should not rush to publish “THE FINAL META” during the first week of beta or launch. Early information is valuable, but early information is not necessarily mature information, and credibility is lost quickly when a definitive claim is overturned days later because the underlying system was not yet understood. RUIN should not treat tooltips as proof of performance, one player’s experience as universal evidence, or community speculation as confirmed Blizzard design. A tooltip tells us what an ability says; it does not tell us how the ability performs under movement, latency, resource starvation, gear scaling, group coordination or real encounter conditions. RUIN should also resist the temptation to confuse a highly optimized build with the best build for everyone. A build that requires perfect timing and expensive equipment may be the strongest theoretical configuration while being completely inappropriate for a new player or a casual guild.
The Emerging Class Map
This table represents research priorities and design risk, not a final power ranking. The Final Class AssessmentThe deeper Forever’s talent and class evidence is examined, the less convincing it becomes to describe the project simply as “Classic with new content.” A more accurate description is Classic with a redesigned class ecosystem: one in which Blizzard is preserving the original resource identities and recognizable archetypes while creating more complete combat loops around them. Warrior is becoming more tactical through Rage management, weapon identity, mobility and defensive interaction. Paladin is receiving what may be the game’s most comprehensive reconstruction, built around Holy Strike, Seals, Mana and active mitigation. Hunter is being split into markedly stronger commander, marksman and melee identities, with Survival becoming a genuine area of experimentation. Rogue is turning Combo Points into part of a broader cooldown engine. Priest is shifting toward prevention, spell diversity and stronger integration of Holy damage. Shaman is becoming an actual melee-spell hybrid. Mage is turning Mana into an offensive resource. Warlock is building interconnected systems around DoTs, Demons and spell schools while leaving the possibility of tanking open for investigation. Druid is becoming a more complete four-role hybrid while creating perhaps the most difficult problem of all: how to reward flexibility without making it mandatory. These changes also demonstrate why class balance cannot be separated from the rest of Forever. Talents affect gear. Gear affects professions. Professions affect leveling and economy. Race affects class optimization. Class optimization affects group composition. Group composition affects dungeon strategy, raid strategy and PvP strategy. The class system is therefore not a feature sitting inside Forever; it is the connective tissue through which nearly every other system is experienced.
That may ultimately be Blizzard’s greatest opportunity and its greatest risk. The Most Important Questions the Beta Must AnswerDoes Paladin’s redesign create meaningful choices or simply a mandatory sequence? Blizzard appears to be giving Holy, Protection and Retribution significantly more active systems, but the final test is whether players must make contextual decisions or merely memorize the optimal order of operations. Can Protection Paladin actually solve the historic Mana problem without becoming universally mandatory? If blocking, Seals and defensive abilities create an extremely efficient resource loop, the class could move from historically underrepresented tank to default tank in a surprisingly short time. Can Arms remain competitive without becoming Fury with different animations? Its new Rage interactions, weapon mechanics and situational abilities are promising, but the specialization ultimately needs a distinct reason to exist in sustained endgame content. Can Survival Hunter become a fully supported melee ecosystem? The talents clearly point toward a melee identity, but equipment, scaling and encounter design will determine whether it is genuinely competitive or primarily experimental. Are Hunter and Warlock defensive mechanics evidence of expanded tank roles or simply broader survivability? Both classes now contain enough clues to justify investigation, but professional analysis should wait for direct evidence before declaring new roles. Does Rogue’s Restless Blades create strategic timing decisions? The system is elegant on paper, but testing must determine whether players actually choose when to accelerate cooldowns or simply follow one mathematically dominant sequence. Can Discipline Priest create a distinct prevention identity without becoming excessively durable? Absorption, shielding, healing and offensive Holy mechanics could create tremendous skill expression, but they also have the potential to make the class too self-sufficient. Does Enhancement Shaman actually feel like a hybrid in combat? Maelstrom Weapon and Stormstrike create the architecture, but actual gameplay will determine whether the player feels like a hybrid or simply a melee specialization with a spell proc. Does Arcane Mage turn Mana into strategy? Arcane Blast should reward players for understanding risk and resource thresholds. If there is always one correct stack count and one correct cash-out sequence, the mechanic will be less dynamic than it first appears. Does Affliction finally become a true sustained-pressure specialization? Drain Hope, Improved Drains and Pandemic suggest a much more coherent DoT system, but actual encounter pacing and debuff limits will determine whether the redesign works in practice. Can Druid remain flexible without becoming mandatory? Four-role utility is enormously powerful, particularly in smaller groups, and Blizzard must preserve that value without making every serious group composition feel incomplete without one. Can new baseline abilities improve Classic combat without erasing Classic pacing? This may be the most important question of all because it touches every class simultaneously.
The answer will determine whether Forever’s class redesign becomes one of the strongest parts of the game or one of its greatest sources of unnecessary complexity.
